David Banner & 9th Wonder Push Campaign for New Album

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Usually known to get the club jumping, rapper David Banner is taking another approach with his upcoming project Death Of A Pop Star.

Teaming up with 9th Wonder for the entire project and bringing it back to the day when an album was strictly one rapper and one producer, the two have started their campaign for their collaborative effort, which has been rumored to be a free album with any donations being given to a non-profit organization.

With everyone crying about the lack of quality music circulating, this album looks as though it is meant to invoke consciousness into the mainstream, which has been most prominent in the underground and rarely given a platform.

Word to the wise for the visual below.  With all the talk going around about Jay Z and artists embracing the evil to gain success, it might be a better move to shy away from using the deep voice in the background for future notice.  The last thing that Banner and Wonder need is for someone to slow it down and find hidden messages.

Creativity isn't always what it's cracked up to be.

Supreme Court Throws Out Ruling In Favor of Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

The Supreme Court has ruled against prominent former Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal, tossing an appeal that would nullify his death sentence.

The Supreme Court ruled Monday that a lower court must revisit its earlier ruling granting a new sentencing hearing.

Abu-Jamal himself petitioned for a new trial last year. His petition was thrown out as well.

His fate now lies with that court which can either reinstate his death sentence or order a new federal trial.

Abu-Jamal was convicted of killing Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner after he pulled over Abu-Jamal's brother in 1981.

According to the original court case, a nearby Abu-Jamal ran over to the scene and shot Faulkner in the head and the back.

Faulkner returned fire before perishing, leaving Abu-Jamal injured on the scene with his gun nearby when police arrived.

Activists in the U.S. and Europe have rallied in support of him claiming that he was a victim of racist judicial system.

His various books and radio broadcasts from jail have kept his trial prominent in the media for nearly three decades.

Cooper assaulted the officer by biting down on the official's nipple causing blood loss and severe damage. Police say he also reached for the officer's holster.

The official was taken to a hospital where a doctor confirmed that he lost the nipple.

Those are some cuts and bruises….

Man Killed During "MLK Celebration”

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Ever sit back and wonder why everything that has the name Martin Luther King, Jr tagged to it is usually a place where something goes wrong and crime seems to run rampant?

Most people that live in cities that have a street named after Dr. King will probably make that the street is flooded with violence and negative activity.

On Sunday, a 21-year-old male was shot and killed outside a sports bar that was rented out under the false pretense that it would be the venue for a Martin Luther King celebration, according to authorities.

Deandre Bailey, of Oakland, was taken to Eden Medical Center where he was pronounced dead by officials.

Located at the corner of Clawiter and Depot roads at Mike's Sports Bar and Grill, the shooting was reported at 10:42 p.m., Hayward police spokeswoman Lt. Chris Orrey said.

According to Orrey, the space was rented by a promoter using the ruse that it was a celebration for MLK along with a fundraiser.  In actuality, the event was merely a party which was promoted to the masses as being a club even with Hip Hop and Rap music.

The night erupted when fights began to break out and once two were taken outside of the bar, the owner of the bar put an end to the event and security escorted some to the parking lot.

Tension must have still been there as gunfire rang off shortly after being relocated to the parking lot.

As of now, there are no suspects in custody and police are looking to those that attended the event to provide any information pertaining to the fatal shooting.

Would Dr. King Have Ridden With Obama???… Dr. Boyce Watkins Examines

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Dr. Boyce Watkins, the founder of the Your Black World Coalition and the initiator of the National Conversation on Race, has been a supporter of President Obama but never one scared to call him out when he needs to be. Here he gives his view on what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would have thought on Obama's actions and practices thus far.

The Economy: When it comes to economic issues, Dr. King would likely be in agreement with Dr. Cornel West, who argues that Obama works mostly in support of wealthy bankers on Wall Street. What is most ironic, however, is that many of the Wall Street bankers have almost no respect for the president. Obama hardly has the reputation of an unapologetic capitalist, yet he is labeled as such by many working class Americans. Most significantly, his refusal to even acknowledge the unemployment gap in the African-American community would likely sicken Dr. King, for it represents a betrayal of the trust of millions of African-Americans who've loyally supported Obama since the beginning.

African-American Issues: I would imagine that when it comes to African-American issues, Dr. King's opinion would be in line with those of The Rev. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. While we might not consider these men to be proxies for Dr. King, we must realize that it is a tradition in American media to ridicule and chastise nearly all progressive African-American public figures. In fact, you probably can't think of one significant Black leader who takes strong stands on controversial issues who hasn't had his dirty laundry aired to the American public at some point (even Dr. King was very unpopular at the time of his death).

So, given that Jackson and Sharpton have presented measured, yet critical support of President Obama, I expect that King might be similar. I do not believe, however, that Dr. King would threaten to cut off Obama's testicles or compare him to a Black man running from a cop (as Rev. Jackson and Michael Eric Dyson did). Dr. King's commitment to peaceful progress and respectful strength would likely have continued to the present day.

Social Justice: Dr. King would applaud Obama's arrival to the White House in the same way he was happy to see John F. Kennedy rise to power. He would expect Obama to keep his       commitments to human rights and freedom for Americans everywhere. Obama has not yet fulfilled many of his campaign promises, but it's likely that his liberal supporters and a Democratic Congress will give him plenty of room to get things done.

The bottom line is that Dr. King would support Obama's presidency and work with him to achieve significant progress. But Dr. King and Barack Obama are very different leaders. America would not be ready for a Black (or even a white) president who thinks the way Dr. King did during his lifetime. Dr. King's commitments were to fairness, protecting the poor, and standing up for the disenfranchised. Unfortunately, those values remain unpopular within the power structure of our current capitalist society.
