President Obama is affirming plans to aid Haiti in its earthquake relief effort, promising “unwavering support” for the small country.
The President made the statement today during a press conference announcing the U.S.'s plan to assist the ailing country.
Speaking from the Diplomatic Reception Room in the White House, President Obama expressed his condolences to the people of Haiti but promised that help was on the way.
“I want to extend to the people of Haiti the deep condolences and unwavering support of the American people…I have directed my administration to respond with a swift, coordinated and aggressive effort to save lives…
Haitians are our neighbors in the Americas and here at home, so we have to be there for them in their hours of need. Despite the fact that we are experiencing tough times here at home, I would encourage those Americans who want to support the urgent humanitarian efforts to go to whitehouse.gov, where you can learn how to contribute."
The President also added that families searching for relatives in Haiti should call the State Department at 1-888-407-4747 for help.
Pray for Haiti.
To help, text “Yele” to 501501 to donate $5 to Wyclef Jean's relief fund or text “Haiti” to 920009 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross.
