Thousands of people gathered in Haiti today for a national day of mourning, one month after a devastating earthquake hit the country killing an estimated 217,000 people.
The day of mourning was led by religious leaders of the country's two official religions, Catholicism and Voodoo.
Survivors were asked to wear black during the ceremonies which have been ongoing since 6:00 a.m.
A tearful President Rene Preval was quoted by the Associated Press as saying,
“The pain is too heavy — Words cannot explain it.”
The people of Haiti are asking for a worldwide moment of silence at 4:53 p.m. today, the time the earthquake hit.

The single mother enlisted in the army that refused deployment to Iraq is being discharged.
As previously reported 21-year-old Spc. Alexis Hutchinson was arrested by military police after purposely missing her flight to Iraq saying that she had no one to watch her 13-month old son.
The army filed criminal charges against Hutchinson but has since decided to grant her an administrative discharge.
The army requires that single parents make a care plan for their children before they can deploy.
Hutchinson says she had a care plan in order and planned to have her son live with her mother in California. Her mother declined however saying that caring for the boy would be too much for her to handle.
With the discharge she's been demoted to a private and will lose the benefits provided for herself and her family.

"I didn't say I was mad at nobody, I didn't say well I'm mad at [Cam'ron] because I did time. I said this is what's been going on and this is what's been happening, what's good?
I'm stepping out first letting it be known that this is going on and somebody need to respond to me and we can get it popping and get money."
When people mention the Dipset, you get a different reaction than you would in 2004. In their prime, the Harlem bred crew was once labeled one of the most influential groups. For Cam'ron, Jim Jones, Juelz Santana, 40 Cal, Zsa Zsa, Hell Rell and Freekey Zekey, the world was once theirs to sit on the top of.
But after the departure from Roc-A-Fella, greed, discord, a stint in prison, separate labels and what a few of the former member are calling “shiesty” deals, the bright light of the Diplomats has seemed to come to an end.
