Man Charged For Obama-Threatening Poem "The Sniper"

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

A Kentucky man is being charged for posting a poem on the Internet threatening President Barack k Obama and first lady Michelle Obama.

Placed on a white supremacist Web site, NewSaxon.org, Johnny Logan Spencer Jr., 27, wrote the poem, titled “The Sniper”, according to U.S. Secret Service Special Agent Stephan M. Pazenzia.  An affidavit also revealed the fact that it was written in August 2007.

Secret Service were made aware of the poem right after Obama was elected as president in 2008, but were not able to identify or locate Spencer until an informant faxed copies of his writings a week ago, according to Pazenzia.

In regards to the case, Spencer was charged with making threats against the president and threatening to kill or injure a major candidate for the office of the president.

He was released on $25,000 bond, but is to remain under house arrest.

“The Sniper” is a poem that has Spencer describing a gunman that shoots and kills a “tyrant” which is later revealed to be the president.

An excerpt establishes that Obama is the target of such malicious words.

"The bullet that he has chambered is one of the purest pride, And the inspiration on the casing reads DIE negro DIE."

Although some may feel that his rights to speak freely are being obstructed, Assistant U.S. Attorney Philip Chance stated that the poem doesn't qualify as protected political speech.

"This is a threat by an individual against an individual simply because of who he is," Chance said. "He is the president and he is black."

With family members stating that Spencer is not harmful and the defense adding that no action was taken in the three years since the poem was written

Currently on probation from a state drug conviction, Spencer could face up to 15 years behind prison walls if he is convicted of these charges.

For rapper Drake, the same mentality existed for him, but now older, the young sensation looks to use what he's learned from rappers before him in the creative process of Thank Me Later.
