<description>I recently submitted a viable Housing proposal for Haiti, and it was rejected by the ARC as &quot;failing to meet minimum standards
required by the RFA.&quot; Not a word about the merits of the proposal, which eliminates the Emergency-Transitional-Permanent Shelter cycle, and provides recipients with permanent (50 years plus) equity in their homes from day one.

I have tried to contact CEO McGovern, but she seems to have no email address. In order to rebut the critique above, the ARC must show some sign of listening to experts in the construction trades who work in the private sector. In 2005
I spoke with the ARC about housing for New Orleans and was told &quot; We have no expertise in housing. We just deliver food, and medicine.&quot; Now they are responsible for a major portion of Delmas along with the French Red Cross. Have your qualifications changed in the last five years?

<description>Hi, this is Gloria from the American Red Cross social media team. Let me clarify some of the facts on Haiti relief allocations:

- We have received about $369 million in donations for Haiti relief. We have spent or allocated $106.4 million in the areas of food and water, shelter, and health and family services.

- Allocated money refers to money that we have already designated to specific relief services. This doesn&#039;t mean that the remaining money will NOT be spent on Haiti relief.

- All of the money we received for Haiti WILL be spent in Haiti. We will continue to support survivors in the months and years ahead until the last donated dollar is spent.

- We are committed to getting assistance to Haiti and its people quickly, but with a thoughtful approach that ensures we meet long-term needs such as restoring water and sanitation systems, providing transitional and permanent housing as well as supporting sustainable livelihoods.

- Regarding the rainy season, Red Cross workers have been working hard to address these problems. We are working with partner agencies and have provided emergency shelter materials to nearly 879,000 people in Haiti, which is more than two-thirds of the 1.3 million left homeless by the earthquake.

- Tens of thousands of tarps, tents, ropes, timber uprights and toolkits continue to arrive in Haiti, and efforts are on track to reach all 1.3 million people without shelter by the original target date of May 1.

- We understand that the pace is frustrating and we also wish it could be faster. Although we want to build large numbers of transitional or permanent shelters, there are many issues with clearing massive amount of debris, a lack of open land, and other issues with land ownership.

- Again, we are not withholding donated funds for Haiti relief, nor are we diverting the funds to non-Haiti related purposes. We are prepared to stay in Haiti, supporting the Haitian Red Cross and working alongside partner agencies to rebuild health, water and sanitation, and transitional shelter services as well as to develop health programs and sustainable livelihoods which communities so desperately need.

I encourage anyone looking for more information to read our Disaster Online Newsroom (http://newsroom.redcross.org/category/haiti-earthquake-Jan-2010/), where we post any information we have about our relief efforts. Additionally, I invite you to discuss your concerns with us; we welcome the conversation. My email is below.

Thanks,

Gloria Huang
