Fugitive Caught After Hitting Lottery

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Managing to keep himself out of the grips of the law for over a year a recent win would ultimately be a loss for a fugitive.

Michael Luce, accompanied by his significant other Amanda McIntyre, were busted with 2.5 pounds of meth last year, but were able to slip away from the law, until they were caught last month.

On April 16, Luce made the decision to try his luck at the Coeur d'Alene Casino.  After hitting a $5,000 jackpot, he attempted to cash out, but was recognized by the workers from a police flier.

Acting quickly to the sighting, authorities were able to capture and detain the fugitive finally.  McIntyre, however, was still on the run and had yet to be found.

Thanks to Luce, it was only a matter of time as he would make calls to his female friend, from the jail, discussing business.  Tracing the calls resulted in the woman also being captured and thrown in Spokane Jail.

Aretha Franklin Gets Honorary Doctorate Degree From Yale

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Aretha Franklin was honored at Yale University's 309th commencement ceremony Monday with an honorary doctorate degree.

The Queen of Soul was named a Doctor of Music by the University and joined several other luminaries honored including Secretary of Energy Steven Chu.

The University was unsure if Franklin could make the ceremony and printed inserts to the program with her name removed just in case.

The diva did make it however and was seen videotaping graduates with a pink digital camera before leaving.

Denzel Washington was also in the crowd to cheer on his daughter Katia while Steven Speilberg was there to cheer on his son Theo.

Per tradition, Yale does not have a commencement speaker but did have a speech from former President Bill Clinton on their “Class Day.”

Supreme Court Denies NFL In Antitrust Immunity

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

In an effort to resolve a lawsuit with an apparel company stemming from an exclusive 10-year, $250 million deal with Reebok, the National Football League was denied by the Supreme Court in being granted broad antitrust immunity.

According to The New York Times, the ruling of American Needle Inc. v. National Football League was a reversal of a controversial lower-court ruling which was trying to seek protection from challenges to the business on anti-trust grounds.

The court ruled that the NFL is stop open to antitrust scrutiny.

The company American Needle has been producing hats and other memorabilia bearing NFL team logos and it felt that the new deal violated antitrust law as the league is a collection of individually owned teams competing and not an individual that had the ability to negotiate contracts that affect all the teams.

Regarding itself as one large entity, the court ruled that the 32 teams are actually separate, but all have the same interests in pushing the NFL brand forward in business.

“Although N.F.L. teams have common interests such as promoting the N.F.L. brand,” Justice John Paul Stevens wrote for the court, “they are still separate, profit-maximizing entities.”

Professor Feldman, of Tulane, stated that the league was in no worse of a situation then they were prior to the ruling and the only loss is their ability to assert defense that will be immune from suit as a single entity.  The issues will have to be handled on a case-by-case basis.

“I don't think this will lead to any particular increase in litigation,” Professor Feldman said. “It's a victory for all potential plaintiffs and players, because it gives them the ability to sue the N.F.L., but it won't lead to a flood. This won't open the floodgates. It will just keep the doors open.”

Ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Sentenced To Up To 5 Years In Prison

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Ousted Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was sentenced this morning to 18 months to 5 years in prison for violating his probation.

The Detroit Free Press reported live from the courtroom where Kilpatrick was sentenced and says the ex-mayor pleaded with Wayne County Circuit Judge David Groner to go home saying,

"I respectfully humbly ask you, with everything that's in me, to be free. I want to go home, your honor, where I belong."

Judge Groner disagreed with Kilpatrick however and was quoted by the DFP as saying,

“Your testimony in this court amounted to perjury. Most compelling is that you lied to this court, continue to lie, after you pleaded guilty to lying....The initial 120 days incarceration did nothing to rehabilitate you."

Kilpatrick will serve the minimum 1 ½ years in jail before its determined if he should serve the additional time.

His attorneys reportedly plan to appeal the judge's decision.

Kilpatrick was ordered to pay the city $1 million in restitution after pleading guilty in 2008 to obstruction of justice.

The former official was forced to resign after a series of graphic text messages surfaced showing he lied under oath about an affair with one of staff members.

Judge Groner ruled that Kilpatrick, who now resides in a posh Texas neighborhood, was continuing to lie in court about his assets and failed to meet the terms of his probation.

Ludacris' Foundation Creates Playground For Kids

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Giving back to the community is something that always sounds like a great idea, but it is seldom that many actually stand and answer such a call.

For Southwest Atlanta Venetian Hills Elementary School, a simple playground that comes off as a necessary was clearly a privilege they were without, as it was non-existent for 15 years.

The Ludacris Foundation, however, felt it a right for these children to have an area to play and teamed with United Health Care to help that happen.

HHWired Exclusive: Yukmouth Speaks On Suge, The Game & New Album "Free At Last"

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

I can't really go into details about it, because the situation is real delicate. All people need to know is  that Suge didn't have anything to do with it...

Believe me, if I said a muthaf*ckas name, everyone would be locked up and you would see my name on court papers and also on the stand. - Yukmouth

Bay Area emcee and Luniz member Yukmouth has been no stranger to beef. From his 1995 rift with Master P to his verbal exchange with fellow west coast MC The Game, Yukmouth has established himself as one MC that doesn't take verbal shots lightly.

But lately, Yukmouth is on a new level.  No longer being a “hardhead,” Yuk has learned to pay homage to the vets and also that the best thing to do for a newcomer in the game is to teach them how to be a CEO.

Yukmouth sat down in an exclusive interview with Hip-Hop Wired to discuss his new album, new films, dispel rumors about the so-called “beefs” he has in the industry and being locked up with O.J. Simpson and The Game.

Man Gets 25 Years In Jail For Punching Grandma In The Face

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Missouri resident Pedro Guzman pleaded guilty for first degree assault last month after he punched a 59 year old in the jaw.

The 21 year old, got into a conflict with the much older woman after she slammed his car door and told him to get off of her property. Guzman then warned the woman's granddaughter, by telling her

“Get your grandma , or I will put her on the floor."

When the grandma refused to leave, Pedro did just that and punched her square in the face, breaking her jaw in the process. In fact, he punched her so hard she was on a liquid diet for four weeks. (Not a joke)
Platte County Attorney Eric Zhand tells The Kansas City Star,

"It is beyond the pale for a 19-year-old man to sucker punch a woman who is 40 years older than he is. This defendant has repeatedly shown that he is unwilling to live by the rules of civilized society and simply needs to be locked away from the rest of us.”

Guzman is required to serve 85 percent of his sentence, so it will be 21 years before he could even speak about parole.

Guzman was said to be yelling “POW! Right In the Kisser!” during the punch. (Okay, that one was a joke)
