A Couple In Malawi Facing 10 Years In Prison For Being Gay

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

A gay couple has been jailed and convicted over what the judge deemed inappropriate and unnatural behavior.

According to reports, Malawian citizens Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza, who are openly gay men, were arrested after celebrating their engagement with a party at a hotel where Chimbalanga worked.

In court, the judge deemed the act of homosexuality to be inappropriate and convicted the couple for unnatural acts and gross indecency under laws dating from the colonial era. Blantyre Chief Resident Magistrate Nyakwawa Usiwa said the sentencing will take place on Thursday and they could be imprisoned for up to 14 years.

Edi Phiri, a gay man who fled Malawi for Britain five years ago after being beaten because of his sexuality, said he was shocked by Tuesday's verdict.

"It's very, very pathetic," he said. "I don't know how I can describe how disappointed I am."

For the gay men and lesbians that remain, many feel that the verdict will cause them to go into hiding thus making the tracking of AIDS and HIV harder, because gay people forced underground in Africa are unlikely to seek counseling and treatment for AIDS, activists say. In Malawi, nearly 1 million people – an estimated 12 percent of the population – are living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Although facing very harsh criticism from neighboring European countries, the Malawian government, backed by church leaders, says it is clear the two men broke the law.

Religious officials say homosexuality is "sinful" and the West should not be allowed to use its financial power to force Malawi to accept homosexuality. Malawi relies on donors for 40 percent of its development budget.

At the verdict reading, the attorney for the two gentlemen, Priti Patel of the Southern African Litigation Centre, said the couple could appeal on the grounds that the laws under which they were prosecuted violate the country's 1994 constitution; although an earlier attempt by their lawyer to have the case thrown out on those grounds was rejected.

Homosexuality is illegal in at least 37 countries in Africa including Malawi. In Uganda, lawmakers are considering a bill that could sentence homosexuals to life in prison and includes capital punishment for "repeat offenders." Even in South Africa, the only African country that recognizes gay rights, gangs have raped lesbians.

NYPD Detective Arrested for Sexual Assault

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

A former NYPD narcotic detective has been arrested after reports surfaced that he forced the girlfriend of a suspected drug dealer to perform a sexual act in a bathroom at the police station.

Federal authorities allege that Oscar Sandino victimized at least two other women under similar circumstances during his tenure as a police officer.

Since the initial discovery of the pending allegations in 2008, Sandino has been removed from active duty. Authorities arrested Sadino on Tuesday (May 18) on charges of misdemeanor sexual misconduct.

Jamaican Prime Minster Agrees To Return Drug Lord Back To U.S.

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

After much debate, Jamaica's prime minister has finally decided to let up from his initial decision and will now allow a drug kingpin to be extradited to the United States.

Participating in a struggle that lasted nine-months with Washington, Prime Minister Bruce Golding announced Monday that he would be the U.S.'s request to have Christopher “Dudus” Coke returned.

Son of the Shower Posse leader Lester Lloyd Coke, more commonly known as Jim Brown, his father was an integral factor during the 1980s cocaine wars.  U.S. prosecutors stated that his son took over the organization after his death in 1991 from a prison fire while waiting to be returned to the United States.

Under the direction of the younger Coke, the members have been able to distribute marijuana and crack cocaine in New York, along with other areas, and send the profits back to him, according to U.S. authorities.

Coke is currently facing life in prison if he is convicted of the charges against him in New York.

The decision came with an immense amount of potential backlash as there was fear of those that supported Coke and what they might do.  Before the official announcement was even declared, the streets of Kingston were cleared as businesses and government agencies felt it was in their best interest to close early and avoid any type of harm or being a casualty to violence.

Coke allegedly has control over an arsenal of gunman inside a barricaded neighborhood of west Kingston which is represented by Golding in parliament.

Supporters for Coke were rumored to have stockpiled weapons which would be utilized to prevent his arrest once they became aware of the request for him to be extradited back in August.

Upon hearing the news, Coke is ready to fight back and his lawyer, Tom Tavares-Finson, has stated that his client is gearing up to take the issue to court and ensured that there would be no violence on his behalf.

Golding has also stated that the U.S.indictment implemented illegal wiretap evidence, but at this point, the back and forth has only placed too much attention in the wrong area and signing the authorization will enable the country to place its energy and attention on more dire matters.

Although being given the moniker of a drug lord, Coke is known to keep a high public profile within the ghettos and reports have stated that he has handed out cash and school supplies for children in need.  His civil services have also included assistance in maintaining order by utilizing his authority to punish thieves and other criminals as the government has minimal presence in that particular area.

Man Accused of Offering Baby For Two 40 oz Beers

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

According to authorities, a man attempted to trade his daughter to a maintenance man outside of a gas station.

In exchange for his 3-month-old daughter, the Massachusetts native was reportedly trying to get a pair of 40-ounce beers.

Matthew Brace, 24, allegedly initiated the trade on Monday, but the maintenance man alerted the police of the dealings.  They later found Brace hiding with the young child behind a trash container.

The mother of the child was present during the ordeal, but she was inside buying cigarettes, so she has not been charged.

Although he was not arrested for the act, authorities are stating that he will be summoned to court to be faced with charges of reckless endangerment of a child.
