Racist Swim Club Auctioned Off After Bankruptcy

Friday, May 14th, 2010

A Philadelphia swim club that was accused of racial discrimination has been sold.

According to published reports, the Valley Club was sold in a bankruptcy auction for $1.46 million. The Huntingdon Valley based club had to file for bankruptcy after being sued numerous times for discrimination.

The gated club, which sits hill side in a village straddling two prodigiously white townships, revoked the memberships of 56 mostly black and Hispanic day campers, saying there were too many children and many couldn't swim.

The camp states that the decision was made out of safety considerations and race had nothing to do with it.

The club filed for bankruptcy in November following the discrimination lawsuits based on the incidents and a critical state report.

The club's bankruptcy trustee says once the sale is cleared by the court the money will be parceled out to the claimants.

A 69-year-old Chicago man is being held on $3 million bond after police say he became so enraged that his neighbor's puppy peed on his lawn that he shot and killed him.

Charles Clements is in police custody for the murder of 23-year-old Joshua Funches on Mother's Day.

Police say the retired bus driver approached Funches from behind and shot him in the abdomen.

When police arrived they found they young man bleeding by a vacant home before he succumbed to his injury in an ambulance.

When they went to find Clements he had changed clothes and reportedly told them,
