The NCAA is not playing any games when it comes to league violations for former head coach Pete Carrol’s USC football team. After an extensive investigation, the league has issued a 2 year bowl game ban and will remove 20 scholarships in the football department.
The sanctions from the NCAA came after a 4 year investigation centering on USC superstars Reggie Bush and OJ Mayo. The NCAA investigation began in March of 2006, when reports surfaced that Bush’s mother, brother and stepfather had lived in a San Diego-area home that was owned by a marketer who planned to represent Reggie once he turned pro.
The Mayo inquiry began in May 2008 after a former associate told ESPN that Mayo received cash and other benefits from an event promoter who helped guide Mayo to USC for basketball.
USC has yet confirmed publicly that they have received these sanctions, and await to hold a conference once the NCAA make a public notice of the sanctions. USC Athletic Director Mike Garrett had this to say about the sanctions:
“We are looking at things right now. That’s about all I can say.”
Hmm, starting to make a lot more sense why Pete Carroll would just up and leave now isn’t it?
