Potential Congressman Accuses President Obama Of Being “Out of Touch” With Black Voters [Video]

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

President Obama is once again receiving criticism for his endorsement, but this time it's for his political backing of U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen.

According to published reports, Cohen's opponent Willie Herenton called the presidents praise of the Memphis bred congressional House member, “a desperate political move.” Herenton went on to accuse President Obama of not being in touch with Memphis, Tennessee's voters by saying that Obama “doesn't know the voters in majority Back Memphis.”

“Mr. Obama's got to look hard and long to even know where Memphis, Tenn., is, OK?" , Herenton said at a news conference.

The criticism comes after President Obama issued a statement backing Cohen for a third term in the House, calling him a “proven leader.”

"Together, we passed historic health care reform and together we're continuing the fight to renew our economy and bring jobs back to the American people," Obama said in a press confrence. "I am proud to stand with Steve and support his re-election to Congress."

Herenton accused his opponent, who is white, of pushing the Obama staff for endorsement in an attempt to gain and keep the Black vote.

"I'm going to always be respectful to the president," Herenton added. "He doesn't understand the aspirations of people in this community. He made a political decision."

Herenton, who is severely behind Cohen in fundraising, has drawn attention by making race an issue throughout his campaign, arguing with his "Just One" slogan that Tennessee needs an African-American congressman. All nine House members and the two U.S. senators are white.

Cohen, who has used Obama's election as a catalyst to support his argument that race should no longer be a major factor for voters, feels that the accomplishment of Obama's presidency should alleviate the race factor in voter's decision.

Willie Herenton

"I was inspired by President John F. Kennedy to enter into politics to make a difference in my community and my country," Cohen said. "Like President Kennedy, President Barack Obama inspires a new generation to do the same."

Cohen and Herenton, who served 18 years as Memphis' first elected black mayor, face off in the Aug. 5 Democratic primary.

Tea Party Spokesman Says NAACP Is Racist [Video]

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Tea Party Express spokesman Mark Williams made an appearance CNN Wednesday and made an unexpected comment to journalist Roland Martin.

The two men were debating on an episode of “The Situation Room: With Wolf Blitzer” when the Tea Party spokesman took a controversial swipe at the National Association for The Advancement Of Colored People.

A transcript of the interview shows Martin telling Williams that he should shun racists from the tea party and tell them they're “not welcome”.

The tea party leader responds and accuses the NAACP of racism calling them a bunch of “old fossils” trying to profit from skin color.

MARTIN: Allow me to finish. I have said consistently, the Tea Party people have an absolute right to assemble, to protest. But what I have said, there is no room ...

WILLIAMS: That's gracious of you.

MARTIN: -- in that movement for racists. And what I've said is, you should come out and say you're not welcome here.

WILLIAMS: Racists have their own movement. It's called the NAACP.

MARTIN: Oh, that's nonsense.

WILLIAMS: ,,,a bunch of old fossils looking to make a buck off skin color…

Williams previously announced his decision to step down from his role as spokesman for the Tea Party.

Mother Ordered To Stop Breast-Feeding Her 6-Year-Old

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

An Australian woman is being reprimanded in court after a judge told her she could no longer breast-feed her 6-year-old son.

In a custody battle the boy complained to the court that his mother asked him to suckle her breasts last year during a visit.

The mother vehemently denied those claims however and according to court documents said that the boy, then 5, was “lying down” with her and wanted to touch them.

The court rejected her explanation and restrained the mother from “exposing her breasts to the child, requiring him to suckle or permitting him to touch her breasts.”

Custody of the child was given to a care-taker and the boy will be allowed to visit his parents during the holidays.

The child has reportedly lived with the care-taker since 2004 until his mother told the care-taker she wanted him back and filed applied for sole custody.

A federal magistrate says the care-taker and the boy's parents came to an agreement in the past, giving full responsibility to the unidentified woman but allowing the boy to contact with his parents.

The boy stayed with his biological parents for six weeks until he complained of his mother hitting him with a belt and asking him to suckle her breasts.

Before his death Moten was seen driving to the hospital before pulling over in pain and yelling for someone to call 911.

20-year-old Jacob Wheeler, the man who shot him, is in jail for murder and an unrelated aggravated robbery charge.
