Father Beats 6-Year-Old Son To Death For Not Falling Asleep [Video]

Monday, July 12th, 2010

A Texas man is in police custody after authorities say he beat his son for eight hours until he died because he would not fall asleep.

Police arrested 34-year-old Alex McGowen Duncan for the fatal beating of his son 6-year-old Tekerrious Jackson after police say he beat the boy for two weeks after he came to stay with him for the summer.

Houston police report that Duncan would force the child to get on his knees and raise his arms above his head before punching him in the chest.

On Friday at around 7 p.m. police believe Duncan saw the boy's eyes flutter in the one-bedroom apartment he shared with his girlfriend 30-year-old Tammyra Sampson and her 11-year-old daughter.

The man reportedly became so enraged that he ordered the boy to raise his hands above his head and punched his chest repeatedly until 3 a.m. Saturday.

Duncan described the punishment to police as “chest boxing” and said his girlfriend only intervened to “show him” how to discipline the child with a belt.
Both Sampson and her daughter witnessed the beating until the boy showed signs of having a seizure, was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead on arrival.

When the father was interviewed by police he told them he beat his son to teach him how to “man up.

Police say Duncan also admitted to beating the 11-year-old girl but said “not as severely” because she was a girl.

The child has been taken into child protective custody while both Sampson and Duncan were arrested.

Sampson has been charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury by omission while Duncan has been charged with murder.

University Of Texas Considers Renaming Dorm Named In Honor Of Klansmen

Monday, July 12th, 2010

The University of Texas is considering changing the name of a dormitory that was named in honor of a prominent Klansman.

The school released a press release saying that University President William Powers Jr. will ask the University's regents to rename Simkins Residence Hall; a male dorm named in honor of William Stewart Simkins, a former professor at the institution and member of the Ku Klux Klan.

Controversy swirled around the dorm after UT law professor Tom Russell researched Simkins and concluded that the dorm was named in his honor to send a message to African-Americans after the U.S. Supreme court decision in Brown V. Board Of Education.

In a research article Russell writes,

"Professor Simkins helped to organize the Ku Klux Klan in Florida at the conclusion of the American Civil War, and he advocated his Klan past to Texas students…During the 1950s, the memory and history of Professor Simkins supported the university's resistance to integration. As the university faced pressure to admit African-American students, the university's faculty council voted to name a dormitory after the Klansman and law professor.”

If approved by board members the building will be renamed Creekside Dormitory for a creek that runs nearby.

Simkins taught at the University's law school from 1899 until his death in 1929.

74 People Killed In Uganda Bombings

Monday, July 12th, 2010

At least 74 people were killed in Uganda Sunday after explosions went off in two venues where crowds gathered to watch The World Cup.

Authorities say at least 71 others were injured when they believe suicide bombers set off explosives in the capital city of Kampala, within 50 minutes of each other---first at an Ethiopian restaurant and two others at a rugby center.

President Yoweri Museveni has spoken out against the attacks and denounced Al-Shabaab, a Somali militant group linked to al-Qaida that is believed to be responsible for the terrorist acts.

"If you want to fight, why don't you attack soldiers or military installations instead of fighting innocent people watching football?"

Al-Shabaab has not yet taken responsibility for the attacks but praised them with Al-Shabaab commander Sheik Yusuf Sheik Issac expressing his joy over the bombings to the Associated Press saying,

“Uganda is one of our enemies. Whatever makes them cry, makes us happy. May Allah's anger be upon those who are against us.”

At least one American was killed and six others were injured.

A spokesman for President Obama says he is “deeply saddened by the loss of life resulting from these deplorable and cowardly attacks.”
