President Obama has given his support to the Islamic community in the great debate on whether or not to build a mosque near ground zero. Friday, the president spoke in front of a room of 90 guests in the White House dinner room celebrating the holy month of Ramadan, stating…

“Let me be clear: as a citizen, and as President, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country.”

The president added that in the United States, “commitment to religious freedom must be unshakeable.”

The proposed construction has stimulated debate across the country.

Most notably receiving opposition from Republican’s Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich as well as the Jewish civil rights group the Anti-Defamation League.

The mosque would be part of a $100 million Islamic community center proposed to be built just two blocks from where some 3,000 people died when two hijacked passenger plains hurled into the Worlds Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001.
