Obama Backing Muslim ‘Right' In Ground Zero Mosque Debate

Monday, August 16th, 2010

President Obama has given his support to the Islamic community in the great debate on whether or not to build a mosque near ground zero. Friday, the president spoke in front of a room of 90 guests in the White House dinner room celebrating the holy month of Ramadan, stating…

“Let me be clear: as a citizen, and as President, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country.”

The president added that in the United States, “commitment to religious freedom must be unshakeable.”

The proposed construction has stimulated debate across the country.

Most notably receiving opposition from Republican's Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich as well as the Jewish civil rights group the Anti-Defamation League.

The mosque would be part of a $100 million Islamic community center proposed to be built just two blocks from where some 3,000 people died when two hijacked passenger plains hurled into the Worlds Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001.

City Of Atlanta To Award $4.9 Million To Family Of 92-Year-Old Killed By Police

Monday, August 16th, 2010

The city of Atlanta has agreed to pay the family of 92-year-old Kathryn Johnston $4.9 million after police shot and killed her during an illegal drug raid at her home.

Johnston was gunned down by police in 2006 when they broke into her home without a search warrant looking for drugs.

Officers claimed they were executing a “no-knock” warrant on Johnston's home after an informant told them that they'd bought drugs there.

Fearing that she was being robbed, Johnston grabbed her gun and met police at the door where she was gunned down.

The botched drug raid has long loomed over the city of Atlanta's police department with three officers serving prison time for their role in the shooting and several others implicated for falsifying reports to cover up their errors.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed announced Monday that her estate led by her niece Sarah Dozier would recieve a $4.9 million settlement with $2.9 million to be awarded this year and an additional 2 million in 2012.

The estate was originally seeking $18 million in their lawsuit.

The full city council will debate and vote on the decision this afternoon.
