Promoters Sued Over Scamming Deposits To Book Drake & Ciara

Two promoters have been hit with lawsuits claiming they took thousands of dollars from a Dallas-based promotion company to book Drake and Ciara, but never delivered the artists and never returned the money.

80s Baby Entertainment filed a lawsuit in Dallas District Court on September 13 claiming that they entered into an agreement with Carlos Goodspeed aka Golden Child and Jason “DJ J Rudd” Rudd to deliver the rapper and the songstress on three different occasions, but were only taken for their deposit money.

80s Baby claims in the lawsuit that in March 2009 the gave Goodspeed a $27,500 deposit to book Ciara, Plies, Soulja Boy and Webbie for a Summer Jam concert, only to find out a couple months later that Ciara was tour in Europe and couldn’t make the engagement.

Goodspeed allegedly promised to wire the money back to the 80’s Baby account, once Ciara’s label had refunded the money. According to the promotion company, Godspeed never returned the deposit.

In December of 2009, 80’s Baby and a third negotiated a deal to book Drake with promoter, Jason Rudd. The suit claims Rudd was given a $20,000 deposit for Drake and the he signed a contract stating that if Drake failed to show, all monies would be returned.

What was unknown to the company at the time, was that Carlos Goodspeed was allegedly in control of the bank account that Rudd deposited the $20k into.

In February 80 Baby claims they spoke to Young Money CEO Cortez Bryant personally, and that Bryant said, “had not been informed of Carlos Goodspeed booking Drake.” Bryant even accuses Godspeed of “fake booking” and says Drakes booking had been outsourced.

In addition to recouping almost $50,000, 80’s Baby Ent. is attempting to seek damages for fraud, breach of contract, negligent misrepresentation and theft of service. Drake had this to say about the matter,

“It is frustrating for me to hear that many of my fans, who like myself are innocent victims in these scams, have been misled due to the greed of these promoters. I apologize to any fan that has been a victim of these circumstances or feels let down by false advertising.”
