Celebrity stylist June Ambrose has an extensive resume that include clients like Jay-Z, Beyoncé  and Mary J. Blige, but her career defining moment was convincing Sean “Diddy” Combs to wear a shiny suit in the Notorious B.I.G.’s “Mo Money Mo Problems” video. Ambrose credits her heritage for the idea to forsake common leather for shimmery attire.

“Well I’m West Indian, so metallic fabrics and shiny fabrics is what I grew up with in the West Indians for Carnival,” Ambrose told MediaBistro’s Media Beat. Hype Williams, the video’s directly, originally wanted red leather, but was down for the metallic fabric. But Diddy needed to be persuaded.

“With the metallic suit it was [convincing] Puffy, this Hip-Hop artist, that this was going to be impactful and was going to change the face of Hip-Hop. I showed him the red metallic and he says, ‘I am not wearing that,’” recalled Ambrose.  ” I was like please trust me. I had to make one red leather outfit and one metallic leather outfit and… I won!”

Shiny suit man was born.

June Ambrose’s VH1 reality series,  Styled by June, debuts on March 19th at 9:30pm.
