FAMU Hazing: Tradition And Tragedy [VIDEO]
ESPN’s Outside The Lines takes a look at hazing in the Marching 100 band of Florida A&M University. Since FAMU drum major Robert Champion’s death in November 2011, the spotlight has been cast on hazing on campus via discussion, arrests and suspensions. Earlier this year, the HBCU suspended its summer band camp and recruitment for the organization. ESPN looks at the controversy via interviews with former band members, administrators, current students and Champion’s family.
The debate regarding pledging vs. hazing has long mired organizations like these, as well as sororities and fraternities, and continue to do so. A keen and honest look must be given to these practices, which are illegal, first and foremost for the safety of those involved and for the continued existence of organizations.
