Florida Judge Sets George Zimmerman's Bail At $150K
The judge in George Zimmerman's case has set bail for the accused killer at $150,000. Judge Kenneth Lester, concluded Friday (April 20) morning that the 28-year-old was not a flight risk and therefore should not be denied bail.
Close family members testified via phone in Zimmerman's defense, during the hearing. His wife, who has remained in hiding for safety purposes, said that her husband was "absolutely not a violent person," and deserved to be set free while he awaits trial, which may not start for a year. Zimmerman also took the stand to apologize to Martin's parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, who were also in the courtroom. "I'm sorry for the loss of your son," he said.
Under the conditions of his release, Zimmerman must adhere to a curfew, is not allowed to have firearms in his possession, drink alcohol, or use drugs. The former neighborhood watch volunteer, who following the shooting solicited donations from the public, is claiming self-defense in the killing of the unarmed teen on Feb. 26.
