Fresh off wrapping up this year’s Paid Dues Festival, West Coast rap legend Murs is set to curate L.A. County Museum of Art’s first ever hip-hop concert series.
Starting May 17, Through the Mic will give aspiring performers an opportunity to have their music heard on a larger scale. “For too long, Los Angeles hip-hop has been seen as one dimensional ‘gangsta rap.'” The “’67 Cutlass” rapper said in a statement. “With this new series, we’re giving our city’s hip hop artists an amazing platform to show not only our community, but the world, that we have so much more to offer.”
Taking place on the third Thursday of every month, emerging and experimental L.A.-based hip-hop artists will be given the chance to showcase their talents to the general public, in front of artist Chris Burden’s iconic, Urban Light, sculpture.
The kick-off show will feature a special performance by 3MG, the group formerly known as 3 Melancholy Gypsys, comprised of Murs, Eligh, and Scarub. The trio will reunite specifically for the LACMA performance, while in June rapper Dumbfoundead, will hit the stage.
Tickets to the concert series run $15 for the general public and $10 for LACMA members. For more information, visit www.lacma.org.
