Bill Clinton Says President Obama Supporting Gay Marriage Is “Risky”

President Obama is receiving backlash for his support of gay marriage from the most unlikely critic: Bill Clinton. While the president’s decision to express his acceptance of same-sex couples tying the knot has elicited co-signs from Jay-Z, and Colin Powell, according to Clinton the move may end up backfiring. “Well, I think, yes, it was somewhat risky because a lot of his African-American support in the churches are not for it,” Clinton told producer Harvey Weinstein during an appearance on CNN’s Pierce MorganTonight.

“If you look at what’s happening in America as people change their positions, just [as] I have, what happens is personal experience changes your position. The more gay friends you have, the more you see them adopting children and taking good care of them and being good parents, the more you think, who am I to say to them what they should call their relationship? If the law permits it or if a given church permits it, who are we to stand in the way?

“For people who don’t know a large number of gay people, who haven’t had experiences with stable gay families, it’s a different thing. So he took a risk. I think it’s the right position. I think it’s where we’re going. I think that he deserves credit for doing it.”

Clinton’s thoughts,  mirror that of Nation of Islam leader Min. Louis Farrakhan who also slammed Obama for his stance on gay marriage, accusing the president of promoting  “what the scripture forbids.” However, since the outcome of his re-election will not be known until November, there is no definitive way to tell whether or not bringing up the controversial issue will help of hinder his campaign. On the plus side, Obama’s position will likely bring more financial support, from the gay and lesbian community.

As his re-election campaign moves forward, following an unfavorable job report released early Friday (June 1), Obama will head to Minnesota to push his economic “to-do list.”
