Lupe Fiasco was named a Vans OTW Advocate earlier this year and in its latest video the Chicago MC talks about the the origins of the lessons he’s taken and applied to his craft. One of rapper’s more important inspirations turns out to be renowned Spanish artist Pablo Picasso.

“One of my biggest theories that I run on came from Picasso,” explained Lupe. “Picasso said that he worked his whole life to paint like a five year old… Something that was really simple but within that simplicity, there’s always complexity.”

The “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)” rapper added, “So for me it’s that…trying to figure out all these years since I been doing music and writing raps and songs and stories and whatever, has been trying to find that simplest form to express these complex idea. And it works.”
