George Zimmerman’s lawyer is making a last-ditch effort to get his client released from custody. In a defense motion released Monday (June 25), Mike O’Mara asked the judge to grant the 28-year-old’s release, on grounds that he’s not a flight risk.

Zimerman, who claims to have shot Trayvon Martin in self-defense, has had his credibility called into question, on more than one occasion. Most recently, he and his wife were exposed for lying to police about money in their bank account. The couple also spoke in code during phone conversations, and may have been conspiring to leave to country. “Mr. Zimmerman’s failure to advise the court of the existence of the donated funds at the initial bail hearing was wrong and Mr. Zimmerman accepts responsibility for his part in allowing the court to be misled as to his true financial circumstances,” O’Mara wrote in the motion.  “Counsel, however, points to Mr. Zimmerman’s voluntary disclosure of the fund and immediate surrender of any interest in the donated money through transfer of the fund to counsel for deposit in trust.”

Although Zimmerman’s first website begging for the public’s assistance was shut down, O’Mara later opened a second website, which has spiked in donations since he was ordered back into custody.

Zimmerman’s  bond hearing is scheduled for Friday (June 29), if denied release, he will sit in jail until the start of his second-degree murder trial.
