Kobe Bryant’s declaration that the current basketball team hitting the 2012 Summer Olympics could beat the epic ’92 squad has become a heated debated, one that President Obama has weighed in on. According to the commander in chief, Bryant’s words show a clear gap between basketball fans. “This is a generational thing,” Obama told ESPN2 while attending an exhibition game between the U.S. and Brazil in Washington, Monday (July 16). “I was around in ’92, I was a Bulls fan, so I’ve got to go with the original Dream Team.

The current team comprised of the likes of Bryant, Lebron James, and Kevin Durant, is not too shabby, but speaking against their predecessors may not be the best idea. “I suspect that Michael [Jordan] and ‘Sir Charles’ [Barkley] and others would point out they were probably never down at any point in any of their games,” Obama added. “But this is a great team, unbelievable talent.”

As for why Bryant would think to challenge the skills of the same people who paved the way for his career feats, Obama remarked that it’s in his nature. “You know, Kobe’s a competitor, so you expect him to do a little trash talking whenever the opportunity arises.”

Can’t argue with that.
