Donald Trump may have temporarily put his “birther” attack on President Obama on hold, but an Arizona sheriff has emerged to pick up the slack. Maricopa County Sherriff Joe Arpaio held a press conference Tuesday (July 17) to announce that there is probable cause driving him to believe that the president is not an American.

Arpaio, whose department has been accused of racial profiling in the past, alleges that a group of volunteer investigators helped him reach the conclusion. “At the very least, I can tell you this, based on all of the evidence presented and investigated, I cannot in good faith report to you that these documents are authentic,” he said. “My investigators believe that the long-form birth certificate was manufactured electronically and that it did not originate in a paper format as claimed by the White House.”

Chief investigator Mike Zullo based his findings on an interview with the 95-year-old woman who signed the president’s birth certificate—50 years ago. According to the woman, sections of the paperwork regarding Obama’s father were left blank.

Being that his original intent was to clear Obama of any more doubt surrounding his citizenship, Arpaio was shocked by what the volunteer squad found.

In response to the baseless claims, special assistant to Hawaii’s attorney general, Josuha A. Wisch released a statement denying the validity of the alleged investigation. “President Obama was born in Honolulu and his birth certificate is valid. Regarding the latest allegations from a sheriff in Arizona, they are untrue, misinformed, and misconstrue Hawaii law.”

The POTUS did not respond to Arpaio’s findings, but previously released a copy of his birth certificate to quiet Trump’s endless banter.
