A 17-year-old honor student in Maryland, was killed during a home invasion, Wednesday (Aug. 22). Amber Deanna Stanley was killed in her own bed after the door to her bedroom was kicked in.

The teen’s two sisters and her niece were home during the incident, but escaped out of a window.

Police in Prince George’s County are investigating the possibility that Stanley knew the killer.

An honor student at Charles Herbert Flowers High School in Springdale, Stanley had dreams of attending Harvard University, to study medicine. “The Prince’s George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) community is tremendously saddened by the death of Charles Herbert Flowers High School honor student Amber Stanley,” the PGCPS said in a statement. “This young girl had a bright future ahead of her with dreams to pursue and goals to reach. We condemn the senseless act of violence that took her life and hope that law enforcement officials will quickly bring those responsible to justice. On behalf of our school system family, we extend our deepest sympathies to all who loved Amber and pray that your memories bring you comfort in this time of grief.”

Stanley’s school principal, Gorman Brown, also praised her scholastic feats. “She was without question the child who was going to lead us successfully into the 21st century,” Brown said. “She had the grades, SAT scores, and the attitude to attend any college in this country and succeed. She was a very affable young lady.”

Sadly, Stanley is just one of many victims of  gun violence this year.
