A man in North Carolina learned the hard way that Twitter can get you in trouble with the law. Donte Jamar Sims was arrested Wednesday (Sept. 5) for using the social networking site to threaten to assassinate President Obama.
Sims—who calls himself Lupe Fiasco's #1 fan— sent out the tweets one day prior to the start of the Democratic National Convention, which commenced with a speech from the president, yesterday. “Ima hit president Obama with that Lee Harvey Oswald swag,” he wrote, earlier in the week.
Leaving little room to assume that he may have been joking, Sims pushed forward with the incriminating posts. “Well Ima Assasinate president Obama this evening!....Gotta get this monkey off my chest while he's in town.”
He also predicted that the Secret Service would be “defenseless,” in stopping him from carrying out the attack, with an assault rifle.
A sworn affidavit from Secret Service Agent Wayne Bourg Jr., revealed that Sims smiled as investigators read his tweets aloud, but once he realized he was going to jail, his demeanor changed. Sims told authorities that he “hated President Obama,” but claims to have been high on weed when he took to Twitter to chronicle his assassination plans. He will remain locked up pending the result of a federal detention hearing, next week.
