Exclusive: Problem Breaks Down “Mollywood” Title, Talks Writing For Snoop Dogg [VIDEO]

In a sea of new acts, Problem is intent on making a name for himself. The rapper honed his skills behind the scene working for Snoop Dogg (now Snoop Lion) before merging into a solo lane by way of his Welcome to Mollywood mixtapes, the second of which dropped last month.

“That was like my first check that I got,” he tells Hip-Hop Wired of writing for Snoop.

Inspired by the “substance” known as a “molly” (ecstasy in its purest form), Problem opted for a play on words when coming up with the titles for both projects. “When I would use them [drugs]  I would always say ‘Aye bro I’m finna go to mollywood, you tryna come?’ so it just stuck. With me being from Hollywood…same difference, so that’s where the title came from.”

Being from Southern California, Problem has fallen into the “ratchet” music movement, teaming with notables like DJ Mustard, but also opened his ears to what’s being produced in the Bay Area. “ I think the Bay Area has a heavy influence on what’s coming out of L.A. A lot of the Bay music, five, six years ago, like with the hyphy music, it was about getting the money, it was about having a good time.”
