Director, playwright and actor Tyler Perry’s reign in Hollywood and his dominance in the world of cable television is one of the most astounding and inspiring rags-to-riches stories ever. Perry looks to expand his powerful drawing power amongst African-American viewers and the mainstream, this after inking a multi-year partnership deal with Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network.

The deal was announced earlier today via a press release, effectively uniting two of the most powerful African-Americans in the world of entertainment. In the deal, OWN will receive two original scripted TV series produced, written and directed by Perry which will debut sometime in 2013. The deal will also have Perry overseeing special projects along with the brand new shows.

Perry’s foray into the world of cable TV came garnered  him a big splash after debuting the TBS sitcom House Of Payne in 2007. At one time America’s top-rated sitcom, the series sparked two other programs Meet The Browns and current ensemble sitcom For Better Or Worse.

Oprah Winfrey on the deal:

I have been looking forward to the day when we would be in the position to enter the world of scripted television. That day has come. We are all energized by the opportunity to collaborate with Tyler who has a proven track record for producing highly successful cable series. He has an incredible ability to illuminate life stories and characters in his unique voice and inspires and encourages people all over the world.

Tyler Perry called the partnership a “dream” and expressed excitement in working alongside Winfrey, and he’ll be bringing a very loyal fan base over to the network as well.

Although earlier reports that OWN’s ratings were sagging, the network has recorded exponential growth over the past few months – including rises in ratings for the month of September. With the infusion of new programming and the Perry partnership, Winfrey is now poised to take her network to unprecedented heights.
