A gunman opened fire inside a beauty salon in Brookfield, Wis., Sunday (Oct. 22), killing three and injuring four, before taking his own life.
The gunman, Radcliffe Haughton Jr., shot up the salon where his ex-wife worked in what is said to be the end to a long-standing domestic dispute.
Prior to the shooting, Haughton slashed the tires of his ex, Zina Haughton, who obtained a restraining order against him late last week. In the aftermath, authorities set out on a search for Haughton initially unaware that he had taken his own life, and locked down a mall, and country club near the salon.
The incident occurred Sunday morning at the Azana Day Spa. Police found the bodies of the victims in the spa, but given the location's 9,000 square foot two-floor layout, boasting several small treatment rooms, and a number of locked areas, investigators ran into trouble combing the scene.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Haughton's father, urged his son to turn himself in, before learning of his death. "This is very sad," he said upon hearing the news.
After learning of the restraining order, Haughton phoned his father in Florida stating his need to leave Wisconsin. "Don't do anything stupid," his father advised.
The victims were transported to a nearby hospital, where two women had undergone surgery, while the third person was listed in critical condition. A fourth victim was expected to have surgery late Sunday.
While this was the second mass shooting to occur in the area this year, the state and nation has seen several violent outbreaks. Over the summer, a gunman in that state shot up worshipers at a Sikh temple. Other examples of mass violence have occurred in Colorado, New York City, and New Jersey, to name a few.
