A woman in Louisiana has become the victim of a brutal racist attack. Sharmeka Moffitt, 20, was set on fire by a group of men likely belonging to the well known hate group, Sunday (Oct. 21), and has been left in critical condition due to her injures.

“Both of her arms, and they are third degree burns, down her chest and legs-one. Basically her arms are real bad,” said her mother Edna Moffitt.

Moffitt was admitted to the LSU Medical Center in Shreveport. According to police, she phoned 911 from Civitan Park, at around 8 p.m. on the night of the incident. According to her recount, three men in white hoodies doused her in flammable liquid before setting her on fire and fleeing the scene, police confirmed. She distinguished the flames using water from a faucet before police arrived at the scene.

“This is a horrific event for our community,” said Franklin Parish Kevin Cobb. “It makes everyone uneasy. It is our hope that everyone stands together at this time, and follow the information that is gathered, follow the facts, follow the evidence, and hopefully that will lead us to justice in this case.”

Police have yet to classify the attack as a hate crime, but the FBI has signed on to investigate the possibility of the incident being racially charged.

In addition to being set on fire, the letters “K-K-K” were written into her car above a racial slur.

As of Monday (Oct. 22) no arrests had been made in the case.
