Even in the aftermath of Sandy, the friction between Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is still alive and well. The two traded insults over NBC's TODAY show Tuesday (Oct. 30) displaying a level of tension that may have crossed over from professional to personal.
Christie called in to the morning show and blasted Langford for not forcing evacuations in the city, hard hit by Sandy, which was downgraded to a tropical cyclone Monday (Oct. 29). In retaliation, Langford said that he wanted an opportunity to confront the governor “mano y mano,” one day after he was pegged as a “rogue mayor” for his handling of the natural disaster.
“I feel badly for the folks in Atlantic City who listened to him and sheltered in Atlantic City,” Christie told Matt Lauer. “I guess my anger has turned to sympathy for those folks, and we're in the midst now of trying to go in and save them.”
Once Langford took the floor, he painted Christie as being delusional, and challenged Lauer to show “journalistic integrity” and actually research the allegations before presenting them. “I'm telling you that is absolutely false and the governor needs to be challenged. Where did he get that information? He is dead wrong.”
According to Langford, although he requested that residents leave their homes, he did not have the ability to physically make the follow the plan. “There will always be those who will not heed that warning and decide to stay.”
Looking at the “glass is half full,” Langford pointed out that the “minimal” number of human casualties, is more important. He also accused Christie (who is a Republican, while he is a Democrat) of turning the situation into a partisan matter. “Here we are in throes of a major catastrophe and the governor has chosen a time such as this to play politics. I think it's reprehensible that he would stoop to the level to try and make a political situation out of something that is so serious as this situation.”
This isn't the first time that these two haven't seen eye to eye. Earlier in the month, Christie called Langford “impossible to work with.”
