A woman in Georgia delivered her son in secret, then allegedly took his life hours later.

Cassandra Norwood, 21, was charged with murder Thursday (Nov. 1) for stabbing her newborn son.

Athens-Clarke police said Norwood killed the baby after delivering him in a section of the home where she lived with her parents, and other relatives. Someone in the house found the baby’s body and dialed 911, at around 1 p.m. “From what we were able to determine, the child was born at the residence,” said Capt. Clarence Holeman.

Norwood was taken to the Athens Regional Medical Center, where she is being treated for blood loss from giving birth. Police charged her with murder at the scene of the crime, but have not yet determined her motive.  Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney Ken Mauldi, who had a hand in bringing the charges against Norwood, did not say whether she may have suffered from postpartum psychosis, or any other form of mental illness.

One of four children, Norwood graduated from Cedar Shoals High School, and was listed as a  marketing student at Athens Technical College.

She has not received psychiatric treatment while in the hospital, and will be transported to the Clarke County Jail once she is well enough.
