For those old enough to recall the days before streaming video and multimedia devices, a favorite pastime  of many was to crowd around the TV in the family room watching Japanese “monster films” –  also known as the “Kaiju” genre – featuring Godzilla, Mothra and Gamera (Editors Note: Rodan!). A newly released trailer for the Warner Bros. Pictures and Guillermo del Toro directed Pacific Rim looks to pay homage to the genre in epic, high-tech fashion.

The Mexican director (Hellboy and Pan’s Labyrinth) is also combining another Japanese sci-fi sub-genre in mecha, which features super sized robots typically piloted by humans with the machines possessing the ability to inflict major damage. The premise of Pacific Rim is simple: from the deep trenches of the Pacific Ocean, a secret portal is opened and unleashes gargantuan monsters onto an unsuspecting public.  After dominating the humans, the military responds by creating massive robots known as “Jaegers” to combat the beasts.

The film stars Sons Of Anarchy cast member Charlie Hunnam, fellow English actor Idris Elba (aka Stringer Bell) and Academy Award-nominated Japanese actress Rinko Kikuchi. Hellboy’s Ron Perlman also stars in the monsters vs. robots battle royale.  The clip teases the special effects magic del Toro is known for, with the fearsome Kaiju ripping apart the landscape. The Jaegers are impressive as well, although it appears they’re largely overmatched.

For those waiting to catch Pacific Rim in the theaters, you’re going to have to wait a few months. The 3-D film will be released in July 2013.
