Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ and a few members from his Pro Era (aka Progressive Era) team just put together a fresh, off-the-dome freestyle video courtesy of BuzzFeed music complete with Christmas themes just days before Santa stuffs stockings the world over.

Refreshing for its spontaneous nature, the freewheeling bars from Joey and the PE clique prove that unpolished rhymes can still be a lot of fun. Stepping out in unison doing their rendition of a Five Heartbeats dance routine, Joey Bada$$ and PE appear onscreen as an ill beat playing on an old-school boom box (we get it, Joey, you love the 90s!) sets the tone. The 17-year-old leader of the crew gets it going with verses using props from a huge gift bag to form his punchlines.

“Twas the night before Christmas, before the mic existed/It came into existence, with no gifts, I’m gifted,” raps a confident Joey Bada$$. The 1999 rapper then hands the mic off to A La $ole (we see what he did there). A La stumbled a little bit but gets props for being brave to spit unrehearsed verses where lesser rappers still read lyrics off their smartphones.

Given the fact that these are kids fresh out of high school embracing throwback styles, Joey Bada$$ and the Pro Era have certainly spread some Hip-Hop holiday cheer.
