After winning the Eastern Conference Coach Of The Month in November, the Brooklyn Nets have fired head coach Avery Johnson.

Only two days after their embarrassing Christmas day showing against the Boston Celtics at home and losing to the Milwaukee Bucks last night, the Nets have relieved Johnson of his duties after falling to 14-14 on the season.

The Nets started off at an impressive 11-4 this season, a record which earned Avery Johnson Eastern Conference Coach of the Month honors. Since then, the Nets have won just three of their last 13 games in December, prompting the team to go in another direction.

“The Nets ownership would like to express thanks to Avery for his efforts and to wish him every success in the future,” principal owner Mikhail Prokhorov said. After Tuesday’s 93-76 loss to the Celtics, Nets CEO Brett Yormark tweeted that “Nets fans deserved better.”

Avery’s son, Avery Jr. tweeted his displeasure in his father’s firing saying  “the expectations were way to high for this team. We didn’t even have a losing record…. Didn’t even give my dad a full season,” he added. “I’m sorry are best players couldn’t make open shots. Yeah that’s my dads fault totally…”

P.J. Carlesimo will take over the Nets’ coaching duties on an interim basis.
