Pete Rock Talks Helping Kanye West With Beats & Being A J Dilla Fan [VIDEO]

If you're a true Hip-Hop fan, you can never grow tired of hearing Pete Rock talk about beats. The Chocolate Boy Wonder recently talked digging for beats, hooking up tracks for The Throne, watching the late J Dilla produce fresh grooves and more.

The Mt. Vernon native kicks things off by talking about Jay-Z and Kanye West's "The Joy," a bonus track on Watch The Throne that was actually put together during the session's for the latter's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album. It also appeared during Yeezy's G.O.O.D. Fridays series of free music drops.

"Kanye reached out to me, I came out to Hawaii. I worked on like eight beats. Out of the eight, we narrowed it down to one," Pete Rock told Media Gasface. "Helped him out on a couple of other beats, and that's it. We did that song. It's a Curtis Mayfield sample that I used to listen to growing up as a kid. My father used to play the song and stuff. I remember it from then."

Another Syl Johnson sample on "The Joy" would cause some controversy since it wasn't initially cleared, though no fault of Pete Rock's. The producer also spoke the influence of fellow beat diggers like Large Professor, Q-Tip and especially J Dilla.

"He used to blow me away with his beats. I became a fan instantly," says Pete Rock of his fellow production virtuoso. "I've seen him make beats for D'Angelo in the studio, I've seen him make beats at home, I've hung around him for a whole week straight. "
