Scratch DJ Academy Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary, Honors Jam Master Jay

The late and legendary Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC fame was one of the founders of the Scratch DJ Academy. The DJ school recently celebrated its 10th anniversary and paid tribute to the Hip-Hop icon in the process.

The New York Post reports:

The legacy of Jam Master Jay was honored at Scratch DJ Academy’s 10th anniversary party at the Canal Room. A-Trak, one of the East Village institution’s original instructors, was also honored Tuesday night and he stood with the late Jam Master Jay’s son, TJ Mizell, to watch a video honoring Jay. The event marked a milestone for Scratch, the world’s first DJ school, co-founded by Rob Principe and Jay. There were performances from Jam Master Jay’s fellow hip-hop group member Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels of Run-D.M.C., who spun classics including “It’s Tricky” and “Walk This Way.” Jay’s widow, Terri Mizell, thanked the crowd on behalf of her husband. DJ QBert and DJ Kool Herc, both affiliates of Scratch, also accepted awards. Those gathered to hear the music included Kenny SantucciEvan Starkman, producer Baby Paul and Scratch’s Dan Martinez.

Jam Master Jay, born Jason Mizell was murdered in 2002, but the case remains unsolved. Late last year, a suspect named Curtis Scoon, who allegedly ordered the hit on Jay proclaimed his innocence. Despite there being reportedly five witnesses at Jay’s shooting, authorities they have been unable to gather any strong leads.

Another of Jay’s sons, Jason Mizell, Jr., is involved in a reality show called Seeds Of Hip-Hop about the progeny of legendary Hip-Hop acts that is currently being shopped to different networks.
