The U.S. Senate confirmed Sen. John Kerry as Secretary of State in a 94-3 vote Wednesday (Jan. 29). President Obama chose Kerry to succeed Hillary Clinton last month, making him one of the first main cabinet appointments of his second term.

Given his appeal to both Republicans and Democrats Kerry was expected to be confirmed quickly. After entering the senate chambers this afternoon, the former Massachusetts governor was greeted by colleagues. “We're so proud of John,” Sen. package Durban (D-Ill) said. “This is a great way to take his public career to a new level. He is certainly capable of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, we all know how he deals with diplomatic challenges. He's going to be a great secretary of state.”

Given his vast political career, Kerry is being hailed as the perfect person for the job. “Sen. Kerry will need no introduction to the world's political and military leaders and will begin Day One fully conversant not only with the intricacies of U.S. foreign policy, but able to act on multitude of internal of international stages,” noted Sen. Bob Menendez, (D-N.J.). Menendez will take over Kerry's position as committee chairman.

In 2004 Kerry ran for president, but lost to George W. Bush.
