Only a certain echelon of MC can produce the raw spitting found on “Thelonius King.” Somehow Blu managed to assemble equally qualified lyricist in R.A. The Rugged Man and Tristate of the Durag Dynasty to perform on the drum heavy, boom-bap inspired record. As a separate treat, the California rapper unveiled an equally rugged set of visuals for the Bombay-produced track.

While Rick Shabazz served as the video’s director, it’s the flash animation courtesy of Ruff Mercy that gives the shots an amazing comic book feel. As each MC emphatically performs their verse, random sketches of lyrics and crowns fill the screen, reaffirming that the trio are indeed kings on the microphone.

“Thelonius King” will mutually benefit each featured MC, as they all have forthcoming albums. Tristate is releasing an album with his Durag Dynasty clique produced solely by The Alchemist, titled 360 Waves, in March. R.A. The Rugged Man’s long-awaited LPLegends Never Die drops in April. And finally, Blu has a yet-to-be-titled album scheduled to release some time this year.
