A New York City mom grabbed her infant baby, and jumped out of an eight story Harlem building yesterday afternoon. Cynthia Wachenheim, a 44-year-old lawyer, was pronounced dead at the scene, while her 10-month old baby miraculously survived by falling on her chest.

The baby was taken to Harlem hospital and is listed in critical condition.

“I wish I never witnessed that,” said Steven Dominguez, who was among the many bystanders shocked to see the woman falling from the building with her child.”It’s disturbing, and horrible. The baby bounced off her chest onto the floor, face down and was crying. My mother tried to pick up the baby, but there was already a detective there.”

Two police officers sitting in a nearby squad car also witnessed the fall.

Before Wachenheim jumped out the window of her apartment on W. 147 th street, she strapped her son inside a harness, but that did not sustain baby Keston, who bounced out of the apparatus.  “I heard a scream, a scared scream,” noted another witness. “I noticed a woman was falling. As she was coming down, she was coming down on her back. I saw the baby bounce on her chest and fall to the concrete. The baby started crying.”

Sources revealed that Wachenheim may have been suffering from postpartum depression,  and penned a rambling 13-page suicide note. “The note said she was not happy and she talked about what she planned to do,” said the source. She reportedly told her husband she loved him, but that he’d think she was “evil” for making him “suffer.”  There was also mention of the baby suffering from a physical disability.

Surveillance footage show Wachenheim’s husband leaving the apartment roughly and hour before the incident, the couple had reportedly been arguing.
