Margaret Thatcher, Britain’s first female prime minister, has died, she was 87. Thatcher passed away after suffering a stroke Monday (April 8).
“It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother, Baroness Thatcher, died peacefully following a stroke this morning,” said Thatcher’s spokesperson, Lord Time Bell in a statement.
Funeral arrangements are already in place and will be held at St. Paul’s Cathedra, featuring full military honors, followed by a cremation.
The lauded symbol of British politics, was called “a great leader, a great prime minister, a great Briton,” by current Prime Minister David Cameron.
Helping to bring the country into a new age of politics, Thatcher served as prime minister from 1975-1990. Britain’s “Iron Lady,” is credited for bringing the country into a new age of politics and out of economic turmoil in the ’80s. In her later years she suffered from various health issues, including a 2002 stroke, which led to her retirement.
Thatcher was elected prime minister six years after proclaiming, “I don’t think there will be a woman prime minister in my lifetime.”
