Nelson Mandela was released from a South African hospital Sunday (April 8) after nearly two weeks of treatment.  Mandela was hospitalized for a lung infection, later revealed to be pneumonia.

South African President Jacob Zuma asked the world to pray for Mandela who, at 94 years old, has run into reoccurring health issues.

According to a statement from Zuma’s office, Madela’s condition has improved, but he will  require further treatment. “The former President will now receive home-based care,” the statement said.

He has been hospitalized three times since last December.

Leading up to this most recent stay, Mandela spent 18 days in the hospital for a lung infection, only to be readmitted for further testing.

His illness has shown how close the country is to its most well-known leader, with many offering him well wishes and a speedy recovery.

After serving 27 years in prison for fighting against apartheid, Mandela was  freed in 1990. He became president of South Africa in 1994, serving only one term.
