Authorities announced Thursday (April 25) that the Boston bombing suspects wanted to attack New York City’s Times Square. Surviving suspect, Dzokhar Tsarnaev, told investigators of the plot, NBC News reports.

Tsarnaev first told authorities that he and his brother, Tamerlan, were headed to the Big Apple to party, but changed his story.

“The surviving attacker revealed that New York City was next on their list of targets,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said during a press conference in Manhattan’s City Hall. “We don’t know if we would have been able to stop the terrorists if they arrived here from Boston. We’re just thankful we didn’t have to find out that answer.”

Bloomberg was told of the college student’s admission Wednesday (April 24) night.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the duo wanted to detonate five pipe bombs but hit a snag “after they shot and killed an officer in” on the MIT campus.  The victim was 26-year-old  Sean A. Collier, who police say, the alleged terrorists killed in a robbery attempt. Collier’s death led to police tracking down the brothers.

The younger Tsarnaev was captured at the home of a resident in Watertown, Mass. He remains hospitalized with a throat wound, and will be represented in court by a public offender. His mother and father assert that he and Tamerlan–who was killed in a shootout with police— are innocent.
