Amid the furor and discussion regarding NBA player Jason Collins’ decision to come out as gay, ESPN analyst Chris Broussard was one of the high-profile few who openly criticized the move. Despite a rallying cry from gay rights advocates in pressuring ESPN to release or suspend Broussard, the reporter stated in a Christian teleconference yesterday (May 2) that he’s unfazed by the controversy.

“Even though I’m getting a lot of hate God is being glorified,” said Broussard during a national prayer teleconference held by his faith-based organization, K.I.N.G. Movement reports the Christian Post. The group offered prayers and supportive words for Broussard after he said Collins is “living in sin” on ESPN’s Outside The Lines program on Monday (April 29).

“I’m getting such an outpouring of support from Christians throughout the country and even throughout the world. I’ve had several big name pastors call me or tweet in support of me. I’ve had NBA players and coaches and management call me in support,” Broussard later said at the teleconference.

Broussard wrote a Twitter response on Tuesday (April 30), saying that Collins decision was brave and that he has no problem with gays playing in the NBA. ESPN followed with an official statement, although it was a mild slap on the wrist according to some who want Broussard fired from his post.

So far, Broussard’s job looks safe.
