Chicago police fatally struck a teen boy who opened fire on pedestrians, Sunday (May 5) afternoon. The gunman was 15 or 16, and pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The incident erupted on the 1300 block of South Independence Boulevard in the neighborhood of Lawndale at around 4:10 p.m. According to a statement released by authorities, officers were headed in a different direction when they heard gunshots coming from the area. They made a u-turn, and spotted the offender shooting at pedestrians from a bicycle. A pursuit ensued, at which point the suspect fired at police. “They’re right behind him in an unmarked car beeping their sirens and flashing their lights when he turns around twice, and fired at the squad car,” said police spokesman Pat Camden.

Attempting to shoot at police a third time “the passenger in the squad car fired at him and hit him,” Camden continued.

The suspect was “DOA” at Mount Sinai Hospital.

A spokesman for the Cook County medical examiners office confirmed notification of the fatality but would release no further information.

Investigators found a semi-automatic weapon at the crime scene.
