What started out as celebration of family, turned into a crime scene that left 19 injured in New Orleans, Sunday (May 12). The violence broke out during a Mother’s Day parade, with the youngest victims being only 10 years old.

Roughly 400 people attended the parade which spanned approximately  1.5 miles from the heart of the French Quarter, to the nearby neighborhood of Treme.

The young victims were boy and a girl, both 10, grazed with bullets and hospitalized in good condition.  A total of 17 others –10 men and seven women– suffered a similar, or more severe, fate. “Everyone around me , except me, was shot,” photojournalist, Abdul Aziz told CNN. “I was pretty fortunate to get away.”

No one has been arrested for the crime, but as many as three people “started shooting at, towards, or in the crowd,” according to New Orleans Police Superintendent Ronald Sarpas. New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu categorized the situation as being part of “the relentless drum beat of violence,” in the city.

“This is an extremely unusual occurrence,” added police spokeswoman Remi Braden. “We’re confident that we will make swift arrests.”

One of the three suspects is said to be a Black male between the ages of 18 to 22 years old. He was wearing a white T-shirt and jean shorts, and spotted on surveillance attempting to flee the scene.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact authorities.
