IV Play releases next week, but before then, The-Dream gives fans a look at his personal life in a short documentary called The Man. This will be the first of three installments done in conjunction with VICE subsidiary, Noisey TV.

In part one, Nash speaks on his upbringing in North Carolina, and how moving to Atlanta’s Bankhead area as a adolescent molded into the person he’s become. He places emphasis on individuals who greatly influenced him in his life time — particularly his grandfather and his mother.

“In 1988 my house burned down,” recalled The-Dream. “At the time I was staying with my grandfather, one reason being that I was a boy and my grandfather felt like I needed to be around a man at that time.”

The “Falsetto” singer witnessed the patriarch of his family rebuild the house from the ground up, and says “it was good for me to see [that] just because the shell of something is broken doesn’t mean the soul is.”

Four years later, his mother was diagnosed with cancer. Sadly, she lost her battle with the disease at the end of 1992, and his grandfather would pass away just two years after.

The-Dream claims these detrimental losses sparked his drive to do music professionally. See more in The Man below.
