Nelson Mandela’s health is fading as doctors in South Africa are hoping to stabilize the lauded anti-apartheid leader. Mandela was admitted into the hospital this month for a recurring lung infection, which has now entered a critical stage.

“The doctors are doing everything possible to get his condition to improve and are ensuring that Madliba is well-looked after and is comfortable,” President Jacob Zuma said referring to Mandela’s clan name.

The medical team treating Mandela announced that the 94-year-old has “become critical within the past  24-hours,” it was revealed Sunday (June 23).

Mac Maharaj, spokesperson for Mandela called the former South African’s condition “clearly worse than serious.” Mandela was admitted in the first week of June. “His condition is clearly worse than serious,” Maharaj said. “And clearly, he’s receiving intensive care treatment. What form that takes I’m not in an position to go into.”

As Mandela’s health fades, his family is still embroiled in a battle over control of his more than $1 million fortune. Both of his daughters are fighting against a judge ruling placing their fathers’ legal associate in control of the estate.
