Director and film producer Spike Lee returns to the big screen this fall, tackling a revered Asian thriller that critics across the board called one of the best of all time. Oldboy, originally a South Korean film released in 2003, gets a remake from Mr. Lee and stars Josh Brolin as the protagonist.

Based on a Japanese manga comic series of the same name, the American version features Brolin as Joe Doucett, an advertising executive who is locked in solitary confinement in 1993 for 20 years. After enduring hardship, witnessing major events of the world and the pains of a failed connection to his now-adult daughter, Doucett is released and searches for the people responsible for kidnapping and imprisoning him.

The clip is not safe for work and reveals similarities to some of the brutal scenes the original film was infamous for. Brolin really throws himself into the part in the clip, showing anguish, desperation and rage over the course of his confinement. With a big budget and Lee’s slick camera work, this version of Oldboy differs in a few ways from the earlier film.

No plot spoilers, but it’s been hoped by fans that a critical plot twist present in the first version will remain in Lee’s rendition. Oldboy will be released on October 25.
