Racial tensions since the end of the George Zimmerman trial have been building nationwide. In Washington, D.C. over the weekend, a white man was beaten and robbed by a trio of Black men who allegedly used slain teen Trayvon Martin‘s death as the justification for the crime.

In the trendy and diverse Adams Morgan section of town, the 28-year-old Maryland resident was walking on the 1700 block of Euclid Street early Saturday (July 27) morning when he was approached by the three men. The victim was assaulted by the men, who took both his wallet and iPhone.

The victim told D.C. police that one of the men reportedly said, “This is for Trayvon Martin” before making off with his items. Although the unidentified man was beaten, his injuries were listed as minor. Police officials released a brief statement regarding the crime.

“The community is absolutely safe and there’s no pattern to these type of crimes,” says Officer Araz Alali, a D.C. police spokesman. Alali also added that he is hopeful that the suspects will be caught and charged.

According to a NBC4 report, the police report lists the assault as  “robbery force violence, hate bias incident,” thus moving the department to investigate this as a hate crime.

No further details have been made available.
