A Louisiana pastor in the midst of delivering a sermon was shot and killed in front of 50 to 60 churchgoers, including his wife. Woodrow Karey allegedly walked into the Tabernacle of Praise Worship Center in Lake Charles, La. last Friday (Sept. 27) and shot Pastor Ronald J. Harris Sr. twice with a shotgun.

NBC News reported on the shooting after following up with a spokesperson for the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office.

“Witnesses said that Karey fired one shot then he went up to him, stood over him and fired again,” spokeswoman Kim Myers said to NBC. Myers also stated that Karey used a shotgun to carry out the crime. Karey fled from the church, but he later called police and turned himself in. Karey, 53, had no criminal record and a motive for the killing has yet to be officially determined.

According to a press release from Calcasieu Parish authorities, Karey had a shotgun and .22 pistol on his person, and directed investigators to the weapons after discarding them in a wooded area.

Karey is being held on a $1 million bond at the Calcasieu Correctional Center and will face a charge of second degree murder.
